Online ticket sales are expected to double from an estimated 16.2 billion worldwide this year to 32 billion by 2019, according to a new Juniper Research study. Juniper reported digital ticketing services have rapidly developed across the transport and events industry, and mobile handsets will account for more than one in two digital tickets bought by 2019. The study found mobile phone usage is driving metro and bus ticketing in nearly all markets, while momentum for metro/bus ticketing also is building via barcodes delivered through smartphone apps and SMS-based solutions. Juniper predicts ticketing apps will become critical for smartwatches and similar wearables. "Smartwatches with NFC capability offer a convenient replacement for contactless debit cards and smartphones," notes research author Nitin Bhas. "Integrating new devices and wearables should be a key strategic directive for all players across the ticketing value chain." Juniper also projects Apple Pay will encourage more awareness of contactless payments via smartphones, leading to higher adoption and usage of mobile ticketing.
