Fans of e-sports are attending major events in ever-growing numbers, mainly for the sense of fellowship and atmosphere, according to an Eventbrite survey of 1,500 respondents. About 81 percent of respondents said they go to these events to feel like part of the community, while 61 percent are seeking to connect with friends outside of online interactions. “They connect with people they have met or played online," says Eventbrite's Christine Bohle. "It’s about the ability to do that in real life, instead of doing it by instant message or email.” Two-thirds of respondents said attending live e-sports events offers a new way to experience gaming and 38 percent said they are likely to purchase products and services spotlighted at such events. In addition, 47 percent said they are more likely to buy new content related to the games played after attending an event, while 78 percent of attendees said they would probably buy in-game content in a title within a week following attendance. Other survey findings include 54 percent of respondents noting they watch traditional sports, with 10 percent of that segment watching 10 or more hours of traditional sports weekly, on average. Forty-three percent said ticketed access to professional player team meet-and-greet sessions would be a highly desired e-sports enhancement.
