For Grateful Dead's Final Shows, Long, Strange Trip Ends in Sea of Mail

The Grateful Dead's announcement of a three-show farewell concert in Chicago over the July 4 weekend provoked fans to send more than 60,000 requests to the band's ticketing service by mail, which is unusual because most fans prefer ordering online via the Internet or Ticketmaster. The flood of paper requests forced concert organizers to delay an online ticket sale planned for the second week of February, while the start of sales on Ticketmaster was postponed to Feb. 28. The staff of the Dead's in-house mail-order ticketing operation arduously sorted through the mail requests, and ticketing director Frankie Accardi-Peri is reluctant to detail the selection process out of concern that scalpers could exploit it. The band's website outlines specific instructions for submitting money orders and preferences for shows, while the concert's producer is seeking ways fans who do not purchase tickets could experience the performance remotely.
