Starting next season, the San Francisco 49ers will stop mailing paper tickets to season ticket holders and instead offer fans a choice between using an all-electronic ticket stored in a mobile phone app or printing them out prior to the game. The team says fans will be able to swap digital tickets with friends or family via email and buy or resell them on secondary markets such as StubHub. Attendees without access to a printer can pick up printouts at Levi's Stadium. Starting next season, those who want a commemorative paper ticket will need to wait in line at the box office, says team executive Jamie Brandt. "It’s a shift in our planning and our long-term strategy to move to a mobile and digital ticketing experience," he says. The majority of fans are already adopting the use of all-digital tickets because they are more convenient and secure, according to the team. When the 49ers relocated to Levi's Stadium, it developed its own smartphone app that can store and display both tickets and parking passes, which are scanned at the gates. About 62 percent of ticket holders have linked their ticket accounts to the Levi's Stadium app, while 50 percent of all fans bring a printout of the tickets to the game, and 13 percent use the official commemorative ticket mailed before the season.
