Columbus, Ohio-based Qahead's TicketFire app has made significant gains in the last several months as an iTunes download, with more than 12,000 users downloading it in July and August, about one-fourth of them overseas. The currently free app uses the Android camera phone to capture photos of a paper or PDF ticket, or to scan a bar code, creating a digital ticket that is transferable via email or text message, which eliminates the need for overnight shipping. TicketFire currently is being used for events such as sports games or concerts, and Qahead chairman Ray Shealy says the ability to translate text from a photo is "our secret sauce." Another differentiating element of TicketFire is that is is technologically neutral, which means any ticket broker can use it to facilitate instant ticket shipping. "We're an engine in the middle of the ticketing industry," Shealy says. He notes a small transaction fee for transfers or contracts with brokers are likely revenue sources for the company once the app has built an audience.
