Mobile app firm Aloompa has partnered with the Appetize point-of-sale system to integrate Bluetooth mobile payments to outdoor festivals and events. The first event to utilize this collaboration employed Appetize's POS system as well as Aloompa’s FestApp, which combined Bluetooth ordering. Event attendees could use the Aloompa app or Appetize’s app to register their credit cards and send Bluetooth payments to one of about 150 POS systems, eliminating the need for attendees to carry credit cards or cash. Attendees used the Bluetooth payment option about 1,200 times, while more than 50 percent of those who used the feature returned to use it as a payment method more than four times. “On average, each order was about 35 percent higher per cap than orders with any other payment method,” notes Appetize's Kevin Anderson. The partners will charge a flat fee to activate Bluetooth atop Appetize’s POS platform; the fee will be based on a ballpark figure of anticipated attendance. Anderson says it costs less than some other cashless options such as RFID wristbands. Appetize also plans to deploy the technology at static sites such as venues.
