TodayTix offers iOS and Android apps that enable users to purchase Broadway tickets at the last minute, and since its launch six months ago the startup has accumulated 12,000 users, made a 12 percent margin on purchases, and is positioned to sell as much as 2 percent of all Broadway tickets this year. A $5 convenience fee is charged for every ticket, which the company says is less expensive than Ticketmaster or Telecharge. TodayTix charges a small commission from the theater for customers who collect their tickets at the box office, while for an additional $5 users who are short on time can be handed their tickets by a TodayTix concierge when they arrive at the theater. Tickets can be purchased up to a week in advance, and TodayTix provides a feed displaying a list of all Broadway shows with tickets available. Users can choose from the available dates and times, see seating charts, and select their section and price point. TodayTix's sales are growing 40 percent each month, while 40 percent of its user base are active every month and 40 percent of sales come from repeat customers. TodayTix founder Merritt Baer says about half of the app's sales are for full-price tickets since people end up wanting better seats. The company next plans to extend its markets to London's West End, Chicago, and Las Vegas, with the goal of eventually operating worldwide.
