Ticketmaster has rolled out an iOS app redesign that makes it easier for iPhone users to purchase premium seats by bypassing the CAPTCHA security measure for foiling bots. Ticketmaster uses push notifications to infer that a single user, and not automated software, is attempting to buy a ticket, notes the company's Mike Lane. By skipping the CAPTCHA, iPhone users can buy tickets faster. About 16 percent of the tickets sold by Ticketmaster in the first quarter were on mobile devices, and Lane says eliminating CAPTCHAs could enlarge that portion another 10 percent, noting "each step we can eliminate historically leads to 10 percent more transactions." The iOS upgrade also enables users to buy tickets to a concert, send one to a friend without incurring a fee, automatically set a calendar alert, and access information about the show. Approximately 60 percent of Ticketmaster venues allow people to use their phones as their ticket, and the company inserts an animated watermark on each ticket to prevent scalpers from selling screenshots of the same ticket to multiple buyers. The app also lets fans sell tickets, for a fee. Lane says the company intends to launch a new Android app by the end of the third quarter.
