Eventbrite aims to create an event discovery platform with the recent hiring of prestigious engineering talent. Among its new recruits is PayPal's April Chang, who envisions overhauling Eventbrite so it controls the event space and makes it more of an event suggestion marketplace. Eventbrite generated more than $1 billion in ticket sale revenues last year, and last March launched advanced reserved seating charts to add seated concerts and sporting events. Eventbrite also reports overall ticket sales have expanded almost fourfold in the past month alone. Free events are a major business driver, and Eventbrite says the lead driver of new organizers are previous attendees who got inspired to host their own event. A possible scenario is a user visiting the site or on mobile and seeing that some friends are already at an event in real time, then being able to immediately buy tickets and attend. Eventbrite co-founders Kevin and Julia Hartz say the new push is being fueled by an earlier indication that an event discovery marketplace was already being established. More than 1 million people visit the site to make purchases each week, and more than 50 percent end up returning to the site to sign up for more events.
