Instead of Tickets, Some Nets Fans Swipe a Card

The Brooklyn Nets are the latest National Basketball Association team to roll out paperless tickets with the implementation of a team-branded credit card for fans who purchase full or partial season-ticket plans this season. The Nets' Fred Mangione says the card addresses various problems with paper tickets, including fans leaving the tickets at home, bringing the wrong tickets to the game, or buying counterfeit tickets online. The cards authorize the holder to access the Barclays Center when they are swiped at the turnstile. However, the sports industry's efforts to embrace paperless ticketing have stoked a fierce debate between teams and third-party ticket resellers, as the system was designed to prevent high-end seats from being resold by setting up electronic barriers that only permit the original purchaser to use the seat. The bulk of the sports teams allow their seats to be sold via third-party websites, while in April California lawmakers overturned a ban on paperless rickets, which was seen as a bonanza for Ticketmaster and a blow to StubHub. The only state where restrictive paperless tickets are barred by law is New York, and Mangione says the Nets' paperless tickets comply with state regulations. Fans who purchased season tickets can transfer their tickets through email or sell them via third-party websites.
