Viagogo officially launched in Australia following a nearly nine-month-long beta program. "What this means now, is that this [the launch] is more of a public unveiling," says Viagogo CEO Eric Baker. "We expect to see a lot more traffic, and it's really the covers off the beta and saying: 'we're ready to roll.'" The surge in traffic is partly expected to originate from new arrangements with sporting organizations. Viagogo currently works with as many as 30 soccer clubs in Britain, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain to help manage and oversee their ticket sales, and a similar deal with Australia's key sporting codes is probable. Baker also says Viagogo is not worried about being entangled in lawsuits due to different scalping statutes in Australian states, noting that the law assigns blame to the ticket seller rather than his website. In addition, Baker says lawmakers should concede that Viagogo is trying to improve the online ticket resale industry by adding checks and balances, such as refusing to pay a reseller for a ticket sale until the buyer has verified that they have attended the event. "The spirit of what everyone is trying to achieve is what we're doing in the marketplace, which is trying to eliminate fraud and bad actors," Baker says.
