Sports fans in four U.S. cities were confronted with long lines at the box office Thursday when a major Ticketmaster outage prevented them from using the digital-only entry tickets they had purchased earlier.

The outage slowed entrance to games at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mercedez-Benz Stadium in Atlanta and Sun Devil Stadium at Arizona State University in Tempe, according to Ticket News. The U.S. Open tennis tournament in New York also had problems.

Ticketmaster quickly released a statement to media and fans.

“Ticketmaster is presently experiencing a significant outage impacting access to fan accounts at sporting events,” the statement said. “We are working diligently to resolve this issue and will provide updates as they become available. If you are a Ticketmaster ticket holder experiencing problems at an event, please go to the box office.”

Company spokeswoman Catherine Martin told Amplify Friday that the outage was not a mobile app outage, as some news organizations had reported. She said Ticketmaster resolved the problem Thursday night.

Despite the problems, teams, promoters and ticketers like Ticketmaster defend the trend towards digital-only entry ticketing, saying such systems prevent fraud and make it easier for sports and music fans to buy tickets and get into events.

But as ESPN’s Darren Rovell tweeted Thursday: “Teams say they are going to mobile to prevent fraud. What happened tonight with Ticketmaster outage affected 50X more than will ever be frauded.”
