Eventbrite's Julia Hartz on Building a Global Ticketing Marketplace

Since starting Eventbrite in 2006, Julia and Kevin Hartz, together with Renaud Visage, have processed more than 200 million tickets worth more than $3 billion, ticketing 1 million events in 190 countries. The couple started the company, now valued at more than $1 billion, to "reinvent the way people came together for live events," says Julia Hartz in an interview. She notes Eventbrite now is on its way to building the world's first global marketplace of live experiences. “Our platform is self-service so we enable people to host events themselves," Hartz says. "The biggest events tend to be the free ones." The company charges 2.5 percent of the value of each ticket it helps to sell, plus a flat fee of 75 cents, or 99 cents in the U.S., per ticket. “Our major milestone has been building enough events to offer a marketplace," Hart says. "People now come back to the site to find events to go to." She notes Ireland is one of Eventbrite’s fastest-growing markets in Europe, and the company recently ticketed the Darkness into Light runs at 37 locations across Ireland. "Live experiences are on the rise. People would rather spend their money experiencing things than buying items," Hart says. "There is also a fear of missing out with live events.”
