The Australian concert and music festival industry is undergoing volatility, according to the results of the Moshtix State of the Industry 2013 survey. The report polled 5,000 Australians and determined that ticket costs and line-up quality are essential for event attendance, and that they influence consumers' decision more than any other factors. Nearly 94 percent of survey respondents reported attending a festival in the past two years and 45 percent had attended four or more in the same period. "Some festivals are known for their line-ups and headliners and others are hoping to have a mix of artists and may not need a headliner," notes Moshtix CEO Harley Evans. He also observes that while artists are not getting less expensive, "[promoters have] got to keep ticket prices in check. We've seen that once prices get to a certain point people start to fall off." Close to 69 percent of the survey sample did not think there were any local venues in their area, while adding to the problem is the continuing closure of venues across the country due to restrictive liquor licensing laws and the pubic perception of smaller venues as shabby and unlawful. Evans says the key takeaway from the survey for promoters and venues is the importance of mobile ticketing, arguing that "mobile feels like the right place for that last minute conversation and purchase."
