Major League Baseball's media company, MLB Advanced Media, is expanding into licensing by acquiring global distribution rights for a forthcoming concert in New York City's Central Park. The Global Citizen Festival concert has no link to baseball, underscoring MLB Advanced Media's goal to distribute a wide variety of live events. Some events will be free to users while others will be available on a subscription basis. "We want to gain experience selling worldwide rights," says MLB Advanced Media CEO Bob Bowman. MLB Advanced Media's Noah Garden says the event will be live-streamed on such websites as YouTube and the New York Times site. "This is the first time we've ever purchased worldwide rights for TV, radio...and digital," Bowman says. The concert also likely will be repackaged into a two-hour special for a major TV network, for which negotiations are ongoing. MLB Advanced Media will produce the concert with AEG Live. MLB Advanced Media already provides back-end technology for such shows as Glenn Beck's Internet TV channel, ESPN3's streams of sporting events, and an in-flight TV service on Southwest Airlines, in addition to the numerous out-of-market baseball games that it makes available via MLB.tv.
